"BACK TO BROWNSEA" "WEBELOS FOLLOWING THE BOY SCOUT TRAIL"
“Many people think that Scouting is a program that has been battle tested for 100 years and therefore is complete in it self. However, Scouting has many open avenues in which to explore, and this program is just one of those. This program opens a brand new set of doors into Scouting.” Dennis Clift
This new program is designed to better prepare the Webelos for the “Transition” from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. This program introduces the “small patrol concept” first presented during the first Experimental Camp in 1907 held by Lord Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island. This program is designed to assist Webelos who are looking ahead to becoming Boy Scouts to understand the differences between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
“The Transition Period”
The Transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts is a tremendous step for a boy that has never had to do anything for himself! Think about it! The Cub Scout Program today is one that is run by its Den Leaders and parents. A Boy Scout program like Troop 110; is all boy run. This “Transition” is the biggest step in a boy’s life up to this point, as well for his parent, for most the boys is continuing on without the parent. This is a major step for a boy and his parent and it should be used for just that, a “Transition”. We at Troop 110 use this “Back to Brownsea” program along with the Trail Blazers program to better prepare Cub Scouts for the “Transition” into Boy Scouts. It was this path that had the most bearing on the Cub Scouts, and the main objective was the focus of a better Boy Scout. It was also the foundation of this program. It was those who gave of their time and effort that made better Boy Scouts that entered Troop 110, it was this Trail Blazer program that has helped guide these new Scouts into regular Patrols. The Trail blazer program taught the Boys the basics of Boy Scouting and helped them along with their new found requirements for The Scout Badge, and then the Rank of Tenderfoot. Then as the new Scouts grow and become more knowledgeable of Scouting they are then moved into an existing Scout Patrol. But the program was missing a spoke in its wheel that has lead us “Back to Brownsea”. This program when started at the Webelos level will have a greater impact on the young Webelos entering Boy Scouts; it will lead these boys down the path that was forged one hundred years ago by our founder Lord Baden-Powell. As you will read within the pages of the "Back to Brownsea" "Webelos"... Following the Boy Scout Trail" book, this program will allow the Webelos to relight their love for Scouting and get a great start on the Trail to Eagle Scout. "Back to Brownsea” will be “by and large” the best programs found within scouting to date. This is because “Back to Brownsea” gives the Webelos the basic understanding of Boy Scouts.
I just only ask one question of you and your boy: How many of you realize what a Boy Scout actually does? Come “Back to Brownsea” and discover the answer to that question.
"Purpose and Goal" This model was first conceived in the summer of 2005. Pack 110 Cubmaster Steve Wilson and I were sitting in his garage on a hot Florida afternoon discussing an upcoming Webelos Woods and how we both thought something needed to be done to make it a more complete program. As it stood, it was more geared at directing Cub Scouts (the “Cubbies”) towards Boy Scouts, but it was not really teaching the Cubbies exactly what Boy Scouts really do. We both felt the program desired was to make the Cubbies more ready for the “Transition Period” to Boy Scouts, so, why not actually transition the boys? As I was the Boy Scout father of one of Steve’s Webelos and an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 110, Steve Wilson asked me to put together a program that would help with this transition. Now this model has become an annual program with Pack 110.you will find an detailed outline that is the result of a few “test” weekends in which the Cub Scout leaders and I sat down and mapped out this idea. Together we worked the main program areas we thought the boys would enjoy the most. This program was a “test pilot” program that became real and functional. Many people think that Scouting is a program that has been battle tested for 100 years and therefore is complete in itself. However, Scouting has many open avenues in which to explore, and this program is just one of those. This program opens a brand new set of doors into Scouting. Lord Baden-Powell first set out to Brownsea Island with a small group of boys with a master plan in mind to improve the well being of the boys.(The “Experimental Camp”) It is his beliefs that have sparked these ideas. As you will read next, Lord Baden-Powell conducted the Experimental Camp to validate his ideas. I kept his ideas in mind when I put this program together. Keep Lord Baden-Powell’s ideas alive and in your mind as we move forward into the dark abyss of a Cubbies' mind.I wanted to bring back the small patrol concept first introduced that week at the Experimental Camp, introduce it to the Webelos, and see how it faired with them. To my surprise it worked and a spark was lit. The concept of Boy Scouts introduced to the Cubbies during that weekend was just what those Webelos needed to refuel the flame towards Scouting. Keep in mind that the Webelos were 10, the average age of a Webelos looking towards Scouting, looking for something more than just Cub Scouts. “A Transition ”
